María felt like she was living a dream. After years of raising her son on her own, she had landed a great job—and, unexpectedly, had found love again. But everything came crashing down when her resentful boss decided to get rid of her.
Years earlier, María had hugged her son Lucas tightly, tears streaming down her face:
— I’m so proud of you, honey. When I found out I was pregnant with you, I never imagined you’d go this far. And now… graduating law school with honors.
— Wow, you make it sound like I was a lost cause — Lucas joked, smiling.

— You know what I mean — she laughed. — I was just sixteen… still a child myself. It was hard being a young mother, and I made a lot of mistakes, but you’ve always been my greatest pride.
Lucas kissed her cheek and ruffled her hair. Though he’d been raised by his grandparents while María finished high school and later college, their bond had always been strong—almost like siblings.
That day at his graduation, as they walked arm in arm through campus, María sighed:
— I’m going to miss you. I’m glad you’ve got a great job lined up, but I wish you weren’t moving so far.
— It’s just an hour’s drive, Mom. I’ll visit often.
Five years later…
Now forty, María stepped through the glass doors of the corporate building where she had just been hired. She felt like life was giving her a second chance.
That feeling only intensified when she met her new boss, Allen. One handshake, and a wave of electricity ran through her. He was handsome, charming… and there was no wedding ring.
She didn’t want an office romance—too many of her friends had been burned—but the heart wants what it wants.
What began with shy smiles and casual coffee chats quickly turned into a secret romance. Office doors closed, hotel rooms booked… Allen made her feel alive again.
Until María found out she was pregnant.
— You can’t be pregnant — Allen said, burying his face in his hands.
— I know it wasn’t planned, but we can make it work — she said, placing her hand gently on his shoulder.
— No, we can’t — he stood and began pacing —. I love you, María… but I’m married.
María froze.
— Married? But… you never said anything! You don’t even wear a ring!
— I prefer to keep my personal and professional life separate — he muttered. — I’m sorry. I’ll pay for the termination.
— No! — she crossed her arms —. I’m not doing that. This child is a blessing.
From that moment on, Allen’s attitude changed. He became cold, distant, and cruel. He overloaded her with work, ignored her emails, and humiliated her in front of coworkers.
Her pregnancy advanced. No one at the office knew the truth—not even Lucas.
One day, while Allen was yelling at her about a project, María felt a sharp pain in her back. Her water broke.
— The baby’s coming!
She was rushed to the hospital and gave birth to a healthy baby boy—Riley. Though she had considered adoption, one look at his face changed everything.
But just days later, she received a call: she had been fired.
The reason? “Poor performance.” She hadn’t finished that proposal before going into labor.
María collapsed in tears—so much that she didn’t notice someone had entered the house.
— Mom? — Lucas ran to her —. What happened? Why are you crying?
— Lucas! What are you doing here?
— I came to surprise you… but it looks like I’m the one surprised. Whose baby is this?
María told him everything—the affair, the pregnancy, the betrayal, the dismissal.
Lucas clenched his fists, rage bubbling inside him.
— That’s illegal. He’s not getting away with this. Leave it to me.
— Please, don’t. I can’t handle a scandal…
— There won’t be a scandal, I promise. But I will fight for you. I’m a big brother now. It’s my job to protect both of you.
Days later…
Lucas walked into the corporate office where his mother had worked. His heart ached, knowing she’d gone through it all alone.
He entered the boardroom, facing the company’s executives and shareholders.
Soon after, Allen walked in, unaware of what was coming.
— Is something going on? — he asked as he took his seat.
— Mr. Walsh, you’ve been accused of illegal dismissal — said the CEO, handing him a file.
— That’s nonsense! She was lazy. Her pregnancy had nothing to do with it.
Then Lucas stood up, introduced himself, and calmly explained the law. He outlined María’s treatment and the circumstances surrounding her termination.
— Not only did you fire her illegally — Lucas said —, but you abused your power and hid a personal relationship. You’re trying to cover up your shame by ruining my mother’s career.
The room fell silent. Allen turned pale and lowered his head. There was no denying the truth.
The outcome was swift.
Allen was fired the same day. María was not only reinstated but promoted to his former position after the board learned she had been doing most of his work for months.
Lucas, proud and relieved, chose to move back to his hometown to stay close to his mom and little brother, Riley.
