The Eli Winch House: A Hans Bille Masterpiece

Posted on February 2, 2026 By United States

Commissioned in 1897 for Eli Winch and constructed by noted builder Hans Bille, this residence is a textbook definition of the Queen Anne style. The exterior massing is a study in late Victorian asymmetry, characterized by a pyramidal hipped roof, gabled wings, and a wrap-around porch defined by traditional turned spindlework. It stands not just as a home, but as a documented structure on both the State and National Registers of Historic Places.

The interior offers a textural density rarely surviving in the 21st century. The foyer and parlors are wrapped in textured wallcoverings and anchored by original millwork. The dining room is an architectural showpiece, featuring hardwood flooring laid to mirror the geometry of the room—a rare level of carpentry finesse—alongside a built-in china hutch and crystal lighting. The spatial flow is managed by substantial sliding pocket doors, preserving the ability to separate the formal parlor from the sitting room and library.

While the kitchen has been updated, it respects the service logic of the home, retaining a butler’s pantry and the essential secondary “servants’ staircase.” The upper level is equally detailed, featuring a landing illuminated by stained glass, a dedicated sewing room, and a primary chamber with a private balcony. Having been meticulously restored from a 1940s apartment conversion by its previous steward, Shirley Mook, this home offers the rare stability of having had very few owners in its 128-year history.
