My five-year-old daughter had always been terrible at keeping secrets.
Usually, that was funny. However, everything changed at my sister’s baby shower.
Ellie walked over to me and pulled gently on my dress.
“Mommy, Daddy told me not to tell you what he and Aunt Lisa do when you’re at work.”
At first, I thought she was joking.
Then my pregnant sister rushed toward us.
“Ellie, don’t make things up,” Lisa said quickly.
Suddenly, I was no longer smiling.
Something Was Wrong With My Sister
Lisa was seven months pregnant. Unfortunately, the baby’s father had disappeared after learning about the pregnancy.
Because of that, our family had tried to support her.
My husband, Callum, had helped too.
Whenever Lisa visited, he asked whether she needed groceries, a ride, or anything else.
At first, I was happy they were getting along.
However, Lisa had also started acting differently.
She looked tired all the time. In addition, she barely ate.
Whenever I asked if something was wrong, she blamed the pregnancy.
“I’m seven months pregnant,” she once told me. “I’m allowed to be exhausted.”
Therefore, I stopped asking questions.
I had no idea she was hiding something much bigger.
My Daughter Revealed Their Secret
During the baby shower, Ellie approached me again.
“Mommy, Daddy said I shouldn’t tell you about Aunt Lisa.”
Before I could respond, Lisa hurried over.
“Sweetheart, don’t make things up.”
Her reaction immediately worried me.
“Lisa, let her talk.”
Then I knelt beside Ellie.
“What did Daddy tell you not to tell me?”
Ellie looked toward her father. After that, she looked at Lisa.
Finally, she answered.
“Aunt Lisa comes to our house when you’re working.”
My stomach tightened.
“How often?”
“A lot.”
Callum stepped closer.
“Maybe we should discuss this later.”
However, I refused.
“No. We’re discussing it now.”
Then Ellie continued.
“They go into Daddy’s office and close the door.”
At that point, my heart started racing.
“What do they do inside?”
“I don’t know. Aunt Lisa cries sometimes.”
Then Ellie added something worse.
“Daddy hugs her.”
Nobody spoke.
A few seconds later, Ellie said, “They also talk about the baby.”
I turned toward Callum.
“What about the baby?”
Before he could answer, Ellie spoke again.
“Daddy said he would take care of both of them.”
Callum immediately shook his head.
“That is not what it sounds like.”
“Then explain it.”
He looked at Lisa.
“I can’t.”
His answer made everything worse.
“Why not?”
“Because it’s Lisa’s private business.”
However, there was one more detail.
Ellie suddenly remembered something.
“Aunt Lisa had papers too. She told Daddy you couldn’t see them.”
At that moment, their silence started feeling like a confession.
I Thought My Husband Had Cheated
After the guests left, I confronted Callum.
“Is Lisa’s baby yours?”
His eyes widened.
“What? No!”
“Then explain everything.”
I reminded him about the secret visits, the closed office door, and the papers.
Callum insisted that he had never cheated on me.
Still, he refused to explain the situation.
“I promised Lisa I wouldn’t tell you,” he said.
That answer only made me more suspicious.
Then he added something strange.
“I haven’t agreed to anything that would change our family without talking to you.”
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
However, he refused to say more.
“You need to ask Lisa.”
Then Ellie Mentioned Another Crib
For the next two days, Lisa ignored my calls.
Meanwhile, Callum continued protecting her secret.
Then Ellie gave me another clue.
One evening, she pointed toward her old crib.
“Daddy showed Aunt Lisa that.”
I immediately looked at her.
“Why?”
“He asked where another crib could go.”
My chest tightened.
Then Ellie said Lisa had suggested putting it in my home office.
“Why would they need another crib?”
Ellie shrugged.
“They talked about two kids living here.”
Therefore, I went downstairs and confronted Callum again.
“Why were you discussing another crib with Lisa?”
His hands stopped moving.
Finally, he said, “Lisa isn’t moving in.”
“I didn’t ask that. Is her baby coming here?”
He hesitated.
“Nothing has been decided.”
That word stayed with me.
Decided.
Apparently, people were making decisions about my home without me.
I Found His Secret Notebook
That night, Callum slept on the couch.
Meanwhile, I went into his office.
I expected to find evidence of an affair.
Instead, I found something completely different.
Inside a notebook, Callum had written several words:
Crib.
Formula.
Childcare.
Insurance.
Legal fees.
Most importantly, he had created a budget for two children.
The next morning, I placed the notebook in front of him.
“We only have one child,” I said. “Why are you budgeting for two?”
Callum sighed.
Then he admitted that Lisa had asked him an important question.
However, he still refused to tell me what it was.
“I promised her.”
At that point, I had enough.
I grabbed my keys and drove straight to Lisa’s apartment.
The Papers Revealed the Truth
Lisa looked exhausted when she opened the door.
“Please don’t do this today,” she said.
However, I refused to leave.
I showed her Callum’s notebook.
“I’m done being the last person to know what’s happening.”
Lisa stared at me for several seconds.
Then she stepped aside.
Several folders covered her kitchen table.
Immediately, I knew those were the papers Ellie had mentioned.
Lisa opened the first folder.
Across the top was one word.
Guardianship.
I continued reading.
Then I found a section labeled Proposed Guardians.
My name was there.
So was Callum’s.
“You want us to become guardians of your baby?”
Lisa nodded.
“Yes.”
I felt confused.
“Why would your baby need guardians?”
Instead of answering, Lisa reached for another folder.
This one came from a medical center.
Suddenly, my anger disappeared.
I opened it.
There were documents about imaging, tests, and a biopsy.
Then I looked at Lisa.
“What is this?”
She began crying.
“They found something.”
My hands started shaking.
“What did they find?”
Lisa took a deep breath.
“Cancer.”
Everything Suddenly Made Sense
For several seconds, I could not speak.
Then everything started making sense.
Her exhaustion.
Her lack of appetite.
The crying.
The secret meetings with Callum.
Lisa explained that doctors were still running tests.
Therefore, they did not yet know how aggressive the cancer was.
In addition, her pregnancy could delay parts of her treatment.
“How long have you known?”
“Almost two months.”
I could not believe it.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Lisa wiped her face.
“Because I remember what happened to you.”
Years earlier, I had survived a serious car accident.
During my recovery, Lisa stayed beside me.
She also watched me become terrified before every test and appointment.
Therefore, she knew how badly uncertainty affected me.
Still, I could not understand her decision.
“So you told my husband instead of me?”
“I needed practical help,” she said.
“You needed your sister.”
Lisa looked down.
“I wanted you to stay my sister.”
Then she explained.
She knew I would immediately research doctors. In addition, I would cancel work, drive her everywhere, and constantly check on her.
She was right.
I would have done all of those things.
“Because I love you,” I said.
“I know,” Lisa replied. “But I didn’t want to become your emergency. I wanted to be pregnant Lisa for a little longer.”
For the first time, I understood why she had stayed silent.
However, I still did not understand why Callum knew.
Why She Chose My Husband
Finally, I asked the question.
“Why did you involve Callum?”
Lisa looked toward the guardianship papers.
“If something happens to me, I want my daughter with you.”
My throat tightened.
However, she continued.
“I needed to know whether Callum would agree too.”
Then everything clicked.
She had asked my husband whether he would help raise her daughter if she could no longer do it.
“And he said yes?”
Lisa nodded.
“Yes.”
Of course he had.
Still, I felt hurt.
They had discussed childcare, money, and even where the baby would sleep.
Meanwhile, nobody had asked me.
Therefore, I called Callum and told him to come over.
They Thought They Were Protecting Me
Callum arrived about twenty minutes later.
When he entered, I looked at both of them.
“I understand why Lisa was scared. I also understand why you wanted to help.”
Then I pointed toward the guardianship papers.
“But you made plans about my life without me.”
Neither of them answered.
“You thought you were protecting me. However, you were also deciding what information I could handle.”
Lisa started crying again.
“We were trying to protect you.”
“I know.”
Then I reminded them about my hospital stay.
The hardest part had not been the pain.
Instead, it had been not knowing what was happening.
Everyone had tried to protect me from difficult information.
Therefore, I had felt powerless.
Callum looked down.
“I should have told you.”
“No,” I said. “You should have included me.”
That was the difference.
I Finally Gave Lisa My Answer
Lisa looked nervous.
Then she asked the question she had probably been afraid to ask.
“Are you saying you won’t take my daughter?”
Immediately, I shook my head.
“No.”
She looked surprised.
“If your daughter ever needs me, she has me. She also has Callum and Ellie.”
Lisa started crying again.
However, I pushed the guardianship papers aside.
“But we are not going to plan your death while you’re still preparing to give birth.”
Lisa laughed through her tears.
“That sounded bossy.”
“It was.”
For the first time in days, all three of us laughed.
Then I asked Lisa something much more important.
“What do you need from me right now?”
She looked surprised.
“Right now?”
“Yes. Not what I think you need. What do you actually want?”
After thinking for a moment, she answered.
“Come to my appointment on Thursday.”
“Okay.”
“And don’t bring a notebook.”
I smiled.
“Fine.”
“And don’t ask the doctor seventeen questions.”
“Twelve.”
“Five.”
“Ten.”
“Seven.”
“Deal.”
We Finally Made the Decision Together
Two weeks later, we completed the guardianship paperwork.
This time, however, all three of us took part in the decision.
Three months later, Lisa gave birth to a healthy baby girl.
Soon afterward, she prepared to begin treatment.
One day, she touched the guardianship folder.
“Still hoping we never need this?”
“More than anything.”
“Me too.”
Fortunately, the folder stayed closed.
Treatment did not make the future certain. However, Lisa was still there and making her own choices.
Meanwhile, I was learning something important too.
One afternoon, I found Lisa sitting on my couch with her baby.
“You’re doing it again,” she said.
“Doing what?”
“Thinking three steps ahead.”
She was right.
I had already wondered whether she had eaten. In addition, I wondered whether she needed a ride or help with the baby.
Then I stopped myself.
“What do you need from me today?”
Lisa smiled.
“Take her for twenty minutes so I can shower.”
“That’s it?”
“That’s it.”
So I took my niece.
For years, I believed my accident had taught me how to survive fear.
However, Lisa taught me something different.
Sometimes loving someone means stepping in.
Other times, it means waiting until they ask.
