If you saw Hollywood celebrities wearing red pins at the Oscars – you need to know what it means

The 2024 Oscars unfolded last night, and as expected, the red carpet dazzled with celebrities adorned in their finest attire. It’s a night when everyone ensures they put their best foot forward for one of Hollywood’s grandest events.

However, keen observers noted an intriguing detail shared by many celebrities… Keep reading to unravel the mystery.

At the 2024 Oscars, singer Billie Eilish and her brother, producer Finneas, along with actors Mark Ruffalo, Ava DuVernay, Ramy Youssef, and Quannah Chasinghorse, all sported a pin on their outfits that piqued curiosity.

Later in the evening, actor Mahershala Ali, though not seen on the red carpet, appeared on stage to introduce this year’s nominees for Best Supporting Actor, also wearing the same pin.

Since these celebrities seemingly had not collaborated on any project together, the presence of the pin sparked speculation about its significance. The pin in question was a circular red accessory featuring a small black heart encircled by the outline of a hand.

Many were left wondering about the meaning behind the pins. The artists wore these pins to show their support for a ceasefire in Israel’s war on Gaza. Since Israel initiated its attack on Gaza, Palestinian health authorities report that over 30,000 individuals have been killed since October 7th. Shockingly, a significant number of those killed in Israel’s offensive have been children, with statistics revealing that almost half of Gaza’s population are children under 18 years old.

As the loss of innocent lives in Gaza continues into its sixth month, calls for a ceasefire in the region are intensifying. Artists in Hollywood and beyond have also joined the chorus for peace. Over 400 celebrities have united under the Artists4Ceasefire campaign, which published a letter in late October urging President Joe Biden and the US Congress to push for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Israel.

However, unlike the pins that symbolized movements like the Time’s Up movement in 2018, worn by nearly every celebrity on the red carpet, the pins supporting a call for a ceasefire were only worn by a handful of celebrities at the 2024 Oscars. Earlier this year, at the Grammy Awards, only Boygenius and Annie Lennox were seen wearing similar pins, with Lennox notably making a plea for a ceasefire on stage.

Actors Milo Machado-Graner and Swann Arlaud, who starred in the film Anatomy of a Fall, were also spotted wearing pins adorned with the Palestinian flag on the red carpet.

Ramy Youssef, a comedian and actor who appeared in ‘Poor Things’ alongside Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo, voiced his frustrations regarding the lack of progress in the call for a ceasefire and an end to the war against Gaza.

“There’s no other option,” Youssef said in an interview, alluding to the necessity of a ceasefire. “It’s taking so long… That’s why we’re all encouraging everyone to speak out.”

Other notable stars who were signatories on the Artists4Ceasefire letter included Cate Blanchett, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez, Bradley Cooper, and America Ferrera.
